Learning a passage, then answering without it
SQuAD knowledge incorporation asks a model to learn a passage and later answer questions about it with the passage gone. On the single-passage version, Google Research's SLEEP reports 48.9%, MIT's SEAL 47.0% and Peking University's PaST 56.9%. On 454 sealed questions from 80 passages that none of our tuning had seen, a 7B model with Fintan answered 56.0% with nothing in its prompt, against 26.2% for the model alone: above SLEEP and SEAL, and level with PaST. None of its answers to 40 general questions got worse.
Results
| Answered right, judged | |
|---|---|
| The model alone | 26.2% |
| MIT SEAL, as published | 47.0% |
| Google Research SLEEP, as published | 48.9% |
| Peking University PaST, as published | 56.9% |
| With Fintan, prompt untouched | 56.0% |
| With Fintan, checking its notes when unsure | 72.0% |
| The passage's facts pasted into the prompt | 73.6% |
Our answers were judged by Qwen2.5-14B-Instruct, a model that is not the one being scored; SLEEP, SEAL and PaST report GPT-4.1 as their judge. The 95% interval for 56.0%, resampling passages, is 50.8–61.0%. Counted strictly (the answer must contain one of SQuAD's own answers), the scores are 24.2% alone, 63.4% with Fintan and 87.4% with the facts in the prompt. 178 questions were right only after learning and 43 only before.
What it already knew
After each passage was learnt, the model answered the same 40 general questions as before. The model alone got 87.5% of them right; with what it had learnt switched on, 88.5–90.1%, averaged over each group of passages. None of its general answers got worse.
How the test was kept fair
The passages come from articles never used while developing the method: every article used in development was left out. The settings, the four groups of 20 passages, the bar of 48.9% and the check on general answers were written down before any of it ran, and every group is reported. No question reached the night before it was asked. On the 20 development passages the same settings scored 69.1%; the sealed passages gave 56.0%, which is the figure to quote.
The data
Every question, SQuAD's answers, each version's answer and the judge's verdict: squad-sealed-2026-11-01.json (590 KB). SQuAD is by Rajpurkar et al. (2016), CC BY-SA 4.0.
Limitations
A different judge from SLEEP, SEAL and PaST, and the instruct model rather than SEAL's base model, so the comparison is close but not exact. One 7B model. Answers could run to 64 tokens. Each passage's questions were answered with that passage's learning, as in the single-passage setting; a product decides which learning a question needs. The version that checks its notes uses them, so it is never compared with the published numbers, which come from the weights alone.
